As I see it, Academic Writing concerns all the written texts produced with learning/teaching purposes. Inside this wider genre of Academic Writing there would be other more specific ones, such as essays, scientific articles, learning logs, critical reviews, theoretical texts and many more. I have the impression that it follows a formal register, but not as a rule, and talks about specific academic subjects. I believe it is different from other kinds of writing because it's written by academic people and it's main audience is, supposedly, other academic people, not necessarily from the same area.
ResponderExcluirIn my opinion, academic writing is a particular style different from other kinds of writing. We usually produce it at school/university with a specific aim. There are some characteristics of academic writing include a formal tone, we use 3rd person in some genres, a clear focus, a thesis and examples to support the main idea.
ResponderExcluirBasically, Academic Writing is the kind of writing that we need to use in college’s works, such as essays, learning logs and researches. This specific style needs to follow some rules, as being formal, impersonal, objective and clear. One important characteristic of the Academic Writing is focus on an specific category, such as literature and science, different of the others kinds of writing, which usually are general issues or personal opinions about something. That is why Academic Writing is very important to every college’s student.
ResponderExcluirI think academic writing, in a language, is just one among a complete range of varieties. But as a variety academic writing is used in its own context. The context is the research which can be divided in three small pieces, if looked closer. The first part is the critical based text which is the same as a hard core of the writing (Irvin, 2010). After comes the capacity of knowing how to research and understand complex texts (Lee Carroll). And at last stands the strategies for synthesizing and analyzing (Irvin, 2010). At this last spot is good to remember that the readings in the academic environment are so many that is necessary to filter and read stretches of many works even without reading one in full. So my conception of academic writing stays mainly that the context of the Academy is specific and, yet, differ so much from daily, or school environment that was necessary to look closer to the particular divisions of this variety.
ResponderExcluirI think that academic writing is a genre that we normally use for college's works, such as essays, dissertations and learning logs. Basically, the main difference between academic writing and the other kinds of writing is the language. In academic works we should use more formal and specific language,on the other hand, in some compositions, for example, it is not necessary to use formal language.
ResponderExcluirFinally, it is also important to say that when we are preparing an academic writing, we should search for specific information using trustworth resources, that is why it is so important to talk about this subject at college.

ResponderExcluirAs I see it, academic writing is a genre and there are different types of writing that concern to this genre. For example response papers, research papers, essays, learning logs, etc. Everything that you can produce for academy is an academic writing.
ResponderExcluirAcademic Writing aims to demonstrate the student’s knowledge about a specific subject and how well she or he can support hers/his ideas within the text. This type of writing is based on 3 main aspects: Critical reading, research and analysis. It is different from other types of writing because of its purpose and the way the text is written. It is not just a matter of writing correct sentences and organized paragraphs: the student must be able to do a good research about the topic, read and comprehend complex texts, and extract information within the texts. Then she or he must be able to analyze what was read, create and support argument about the topic. The three characteristics of Academic Writing are:
ResponderExcluir1. Clear evidence in writing that the writer(s) have been persistent, open-minded, and disciplined in study.
2. The dominance of reason over emotions or sensual perception.
3. An imagined reader who is coolly rational, reading for information, and intending to formulate a reasoned response.
Great points! Now that we have already discussed what academic writing is and some of its characteristics (Irvin, 2010; Swales & Feak, 2012), would you add anything to your definitions/ideas?
ResponderExcluirAcademic writing is often related to college's works and documents, but I don't know if they occur only there. Inside this context, we usually tend to think that this kind of writing is more formal and serious than our notes, for example. Sometimes students can have some difficulty although teachers usually require academic writing in documents and exercises, and it causes a lot of trouble (for students) as they face academic writing as an impossible thing (sometimes). For me, it is only a more formal way to write the concepts and ideas from a specific text in order to be evalued (?) by teachers. (I'm writing this based on my first opinion, which was created without the knowledge provided by the texts)
